Lot 334

1798 S-144 R5+ Large 8 with Style I Hair G4. Slightly sharper but cleaned and retoned a mostly glossy light chocolate and darker steel brown with traces of reddish tan from the old cleaning in a couple of the protected areas. No verdigris, only small contact marks. Most of the contact marks are small rim nicks, the strongest of these over the E in AMERICA. A dull pinprick at the left top of the first S in STATES and another at the bottom of the I in UNITED can help identify this cent. EDS, Breen state I, with an obvious dull wave across the reverse from TA in STATES to the E in AMERICA but no cracks. The date is complete and clear, and the legends are complete except for ONE CENT, which is essentially gone thanks to the bulge caused by the wave across the planchet. Far from perfect but still a decent low grade example of this rare variety.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
Ex Ferris Stamp & Coin-Darwin B. Palmer-Tom Reynolds-Terry Denman (Reynolds envelope included).
