Sicily, Gela. Silver Tetradrachm (17.1 g), ca. 480/75-475/0 BC. Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving slow quadriga right; above, Nike flying right, crowning horses with wreath held. Reverse: C-E-Λ-[AΣ] (retrograde), forepart of bearded man-headed bull right. Jenkins grp. Iib, 124 (O36/R75); SNG ANS 29 (same dies). Struck from a broken reverse die resulting in a flow of metal (cud) over the head on the man-headed bull. Nicely toned. Very Fine.
