Lot 297

1796 S-89 R3 Liberty Cap PCGS graded XF40. PCGS graded EF-40. Attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown with lighter brown toning in protected areas. There are a few small areas of slightly darker olive brown toning on both sides, including one that extends from the second T in STATES down to the left edge of the fraction. The surfaces are smooth and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only notable contact mark is a dull, shallow rim nick over the T in UNITED. Nicely struck MDS, Breen state II. There is minor crumbling at the lips and evidence of die clashing on both sides. Nicely struck, better than most of this variety, with ONE CENT complete and only minor weakness at OF. Our grade is VF25. This piece is a new discovery for the die variety and it is tied for second finest known honors with three other pieces in the EAC census (and two of those are impounded in the ANS Museum). The finest known grades only VF30. A very important early large cent for the collector of Sheldon die varieties. PCGS population 1; none finer at PCGS for the variety.
Estimated Value $7,500-UP.
Walked in over the counter at an "old time coin shop".
