1793 "Smith Counterfeit" F12. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown with smooth, defect-free surfaces that offer excellent eye appeal. This example appears to have been made from a worn 1793 S-8 cent, but the engraver was so skilled it is difficult to be certain of the date of the host coin. At the very least the layout of the designs is close to those of the S-8 dies (the Crosby 9-G dies), and the edge has the normal Vine & Bars device found on most Wreath Cents. Both sides were extensively reworked, not just the obverse as often found on these pieces. The weight is only 157.1 grains versus the standard of 208.0 which indicates a significant amount of metal was removed in the engraving process. This piece is far more attractive than the Smith Counterfeit in the fabulous Dan Holmes Collection (our sale 9/6/2009:21) that brought $3335.
