Lot 176

1825 C-2 R1. PCGS graded AU-55. Very attractive frosty medium brown and light chocolate with traces of lustrous golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. Just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. The notable marks are a small nick in the middle of the jawline and a subtle splash of slightly darker toning at ATE in STATES. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. The end of the wreath stem is sharp, a die state called "very scarce" by Manley. In addition there is a strong vertical bar on the edge between stars 10 & 11, and this bar may have been caused by a break or notch in the restraining collar in the press. This half cent was graded MS60+ by Roger Cohen. Our grade is AU50+, close to AU55. Noyes photo #74355.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex James R. McGuigan 5/6/1983-Bob Yuell, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/4/2011:75 (the "Whister Sale")-Dennis Fuoss Collection (lot ticket and Yuell collection envelope are included).
