Hughes, Howard (1905-76) American business tycoon, aviator, inventor, aerospace engineer, filmmaker, and philanthropist. Printed invitation signed in pencil at lower right, one page, 9½ x 7" (New York City, Mar. 31, 1940) from the Mayor of the City of New York and the President and Directors of the Pan American Airways System for the dedication of the International Seaplane Base at La Guardia Field and the inauguration of transatlantic air service from the base. The Yankee Clipper took off that day with a crew of ten, nine passengers, and over 5,000 lbs. of mail. It landed in Lisbon, Portugal 18 hours and 30 minutes later.
