Bartholdi, Frederic Auguste (1834-1904) French sculptor best known for designing the Statue of Liberty; the Union Franco-Américaine raised more than one million francs to build the Statue and the United States funded the building of the pedestal (about $300,000). On July 4, 1880, the statue was presented to the American minister in Paris and in October 1881, the statue was presented to the American people and all lovers of liberty. Autograph letter signed ("F. Bartholdi"), one page, 5 1/4 x 3 1/2", in French, n.p., Nov. 14, 1872. In part, Bartholdi tells his unidentified correspondent that he will come to see him next Saturday and will talk to him about what Bartholdi intends to say. He asks for any ideas his correspondent might have. Letter affixed to card stock; small paper loss in upper right corner.
