Lot 737

[Lincoln, Abraham] Trial and Hanging of the Assassins. Pass to the trial of the Lincoln conspirators signed by David Hunter ("D: Hunter") as President of the Commission, 2 x 3½", Washington, 1865. The pass, which is headed "Military Commission", is not filled in. Matted with an an image of the Commission, from a photograph by Gardner, and a printed description of the results and a bio of Hunter; size is 20 x 16". Accompanied by a Gardner photograph of George Atzerodt, David Herold, Lewis Powell, and Mary Surratt as they are prepared for hanging; a row of soldiers stands guard above. Photo is only in fair condition with numerous white and toned areas, but the view of the scaffold is clear. Surratt was the first woman executed by the Federal Government. Photo is framed in what appears to be a camera bellows, creating a shadow-box effect.
