Lot 521

Revolutionary War Leather Cartridge Box with Brass Ornamentation. Rare leather pouch 5" x 10" x 4" enclosing a block of wood with holes bored in it to hold indivdual cartridges. The number of holes varied but between twenty and thirty was standard, this piece holding 24. Leather obviously fragile given its 235 + years in age with crazing throughout and stiffness. Nevertheless, almost all entact save for rear belt loop which is detached but included, and the cartridge flap being held together by about half of the original stitching. Crudely fashioned small brass eagle on flap has nine stars etched into body with original wires afixing to leather.
Estimated Value $800 - 1,000.
Ex. The Claude Harkins Collection of Americana.
