Lot 1426

Terracotta Statuette of Silenus / Papposilenos, ca. 1st - 2nd Century AD. The mischievous creature stands with hands on his hips, his robe thrown open revealing his manhood, which has clearly been sanded off at some point. He bears a grin with a long and scraggly beard. He wears a hat in the form of a phallus and testicles, which is nicely framed by his tall, donkey-like, ears. Quite the image and a most handsome example of Roman comical art. Losses to legs, nice deep brown surfaces with exquisite detail and fine style. Height: 5"; Length: 3"; Width: 2".

Buyer responsible for third party shipping. Call to make arrangements.
Estimated Value $750 - 1,000.
Ex property from the collection of Joseph Klein (1899-1987), New York City, acquired in the 1960's.
