Incantation Bowl, ca. 6th - 7th Century AD. Ceramic bowl with Hebrew inscription, radiating from center and around rims; in center, depiction of a female demon, possibly Lilith. Completely intact. Diameter: 4 ½".

Incantation bowls were a mystic tradition in the Middle East to protect people from maleficent forces, such as sorcerers, curses, spirits, the evil eye and demons. These bowls were inscribed and buried upside-down in homes and graves. These bowls were used in Babylonia by Christians, Mazedeans, Mandeans, Zoroastrians, and Jews.
