Lot 1374

Terracotta Pomegranate Rattle, ca. 8th - 7th Century BC. Heavy hollow rattle in the form of a pomegranate, used for ceremonial purposes; smoothed sides and crown topped with unknown objects inside, which produce the rattle sound. Slight cracking visible on bottom and some of the calyx or crown part of the piece is missing. An extrordinary and rare piece in excellent condition. Height: 3 ¾".

Pomegranates are significant in Jewish traditions and are mentioned in the Torah on several occasions. They are also a symbol of fertility because of the abundance of seeds they carry.

Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.
Ex Dr. Patrick Tan Collection.
