Lot 1335

Apulian. Panatheniac Red Figure Hydria, ca. 430-300 BC. Laureate nude Eros on left facing right either pouring or removing water from a fountain basin in center and to the right is Aphrodite, nude, washing her hands in fountain; above basin, a towel or clothing; below basin, a mirror. Under horizontal handles are Attic owls positioned to flank the nude figures, heads facing. Intact with all original pieces, minor restoration visible under black light. Exceptional condition and incredibly gorgeous. Height: 12".

Motif on hydria may refer to the story of Cupid and Psyche where Cupid, or Eros, filled two vases with water from the two fountains in Aphrodite's garden, one sweet and one bitter. Aphrodite, jealous of Psyche's beauty, ordered Eros to avenge her by making it so that Psyche would only fall in love with the most abhorrent of men and most appalling of creatures to walk Earth. He took the water from each fountain and flew to her home. When Eros put a few drops of bitter water on her lips she awoke, although he was invisible she startled him, with her beauty, and he accidently cut himself on his own arrow. Oblivious to his wound, he quickly put a few drops of sweet water in her hair and left.
