Lot 721

1836. Lettered edge. Overton-120, Rarity 3. PCGS graded MS-61. Smooth old time toning with a hint of steel-blue color. Housed in an Old Green Holder (PCGS # 6169) .

The Year 1836 in History: The 555-foot marble obelisk known as the Washington Monument, made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss and weighing 81,120 tons, was designed in 1836 by Robert Mills, a noted government architect who was also responsible for designing the Treasury, Post Office, and Patent Office buildings in Washington. The Washington Monument was unique in its classic simplicity at a time when adornment was becoming more pronounced. Building it took place in two major phases, 1848-56, and 1876-84 -- a lack of funds, political turmoil, and uncertainty about the survival of the American Union caused the intermittent hiatus. It suffered damage in a 2011 earthquake but will hopefully be reopened in 2014 barring delays.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,100.

Realized $1,704
