Lot 4085

Great Britain. Shilling, 1763. S.3742; ESC-1214; KM-597. George III. Young larureate and draped bust right. A beautifully struck piece, with a crisp edge and sharp detail, which has never circulated. This deeply toned coin has a catalogue value of £1,750 (around $3000) in XF with no pricing for higher grades. NGC graded MS-63.

* The price of silver was high in the mid-18th century and although King George III ascended the throne in 1760, it was not until 1787 that the mint struck shillings bearing his portrait, in volume. The one exception was this 'Northumberland Shilling' a very small/rare issue undertaken by the Duke of Northumberland (Sir Hugh Percy) to celebrate his appointment as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Sir Hugh was one of the King's confidential advisers.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.
