Lot 1428

1935 Spanish Trail Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Mostly untoned. Popular key type of the commemorative series. A beautiful silver-bright coin with no objectionable marks or blemishes. As soon as one sees the booming luster on this Spanish Trail commemorative, it comes as no surprise everything is razor-sharp on all devices as well. Only 10,008 struck.

The obverse has a punning head of a cow in honor of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca (Cabeza de Vaca being Spanish for "head of a cow"). Nunez explored the Old Spanish Trail region in 1528. The reverse delineates (none to accurately) his path from Florida to El Paso, Texas along with a yucca tree at center, a common regional plant. L. W. Hoffecker designed the coin along with Edmund J. Senn, an El Paso sculptor who translated the sketches into plaster models. A total of 10,000 were struck, the authorized mintage (PCGS # 9376) .
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,300.

Realized $1,351
