Lot 3205

Time of Maxentius, 306-312 AD. Lot of forger's coin molds. Fashioned from red-brown terra cotta, some are now gray from heat exposure. The five molds impressed with coins of Maxentius, both as Caesar and Augustus, and one of Constantius Chlorus as Caesar. Portrait heads are laureate and bearded. Two reverse types present: GENIO IMPERATORIS and GENIO CAESARIS, each with Genius holding patera and cornucopia. The two reverse impressions indicate mints at Alexandria and Antioch. Molds consist of two "center pieces," an impression on both sides of the roughly disc-shaped form. The remaining three are "ends," uniface -- with only one coin impression. Several have the incised casting channel visible. The coins are of Follis size, the molds range from 29 to 32 mm. in diameter. Some edge chipping, otherwise molds Very Fine, or better, with very clean impressions. Interesting and rare.
Estimated Value $300 - 450.
