Lot 2453

T-38, 1861 (1862), $2.00, Error Date. . Thain-1130. While dated "September 2, 1861," through an error, no Confederate notes were authorized for denominations of less than $5.00 in 1861. Approximately 36,000 notes issued. Fine.

According to Criswell "The Duncan printing firm was to print the first $1 and $2 note in June of 1862. None had been authorized until the act of the Confederate congress of April 18th, 1862, when $5,00,000 was authorized. Duncan, assuming that these notes were part of the [September 2, 1861] authorization, has them so dated. Approximately 36,000 pieces were printed before the [error] was noticed by the Treasury and the production stopped. Printing costs being high, and the need being great, these notes were issued error date and all. This is an extremely rare note in condition above fine."
Estimated Value $200 - 300.

Realized $506
