[Edward VIII] Ashtray. Rectangular Aluminum ashtray with high relief image of a smiling Edward Prince of Wales in Naval officier's uniform, smoking a cigarette. A very popular 1919 image of the Prince, giving rise to the expression "Prince Charming"; 5 x 3 ½".

Edward VIII (1894-1972) became King of the United Kingdom, the Dominions of the British Commonwealth, and Emperor of India on January 20, 1936, after his father, George V, died. His romantic involvement with and intention to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American woman, caused a constitutional crisis. The marriage was opposed by the prime ministers of the UK and the Dominions. Also, there was a conflict because of his position as titular head of the Church of England, which was against the remarriage of divorced people whose spouses were still alive. Unwilling to live without Mrs. Simpson, Edward abdicated on Dec. 11, 1936. Since he was not due to be formally crowned until May 1937, it was his brother Bertie, as George VI, who took his place in the coronation.
Estimated Value $250 - 500.
