[Japanese Prints] Extremely Rare BRINKLEY'S 1897-1898, 10-Volume 1898 Edition of JAPAN: DESCRIBED AND ILLUSTRATED BY THE JAPANESE - Published by the J.B. Millet Company of Boston.

This is an extremely rare set of Captain Frank Brinkley's pictorial history of Japan. At the time, this was the definitive photographic narrative of a land still unknown to the rest of the world. Each of the ten volumes (approximately 39.5 cm each) is bound in a different colored silk crepe cover with silk tassels at the Japanese binding crafted by S. Iida of Kyoto. Collotype prints are at the frontispiece of each volume and were made in Tokyo by K. Ogawa, mounted and framed. Inside each volume are 20 hand-colored albumen photographs mounted in the text and six full-page hand-colored albumen photographs which are mounted and framed. Numbered 72, this was an extremely limited edition of only 250 copies and complete sets of all 10 volumes are extremely rare as these volumes have long been broken up.

The condition throughout is superb!
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
