Weizmann, Chaim (1874-1952) Zionist leader and Israeli statesman; the first President (1948-52) of modern Israel.

Typed letter signed as President of Israel, 1p, in Hebrew, Feb. 24, 1950. To Israeli writer Sammy Gronemann, sending congratulations on the occasion of his 75th birthday. Age toning, else fine. As head of the British Admiralty Laboratories from 1917 to 1919, Weizmann, who was a world-renowned scientist, developed a process for the manufacture of synthetic acetone which was used in the creation of British explosives. When British Prime Minister David Lloyd George asked him what he wanted in return, he asked for a national home for his people. The result was the Balfour Declaration, issued in November, 1917; it was Britain's promise to facilitate the Jews in making a homeland in Palestine. When Chaim Weizmann died, the New York Times wrote, "Theodor Herzl was the founder of the modern Zionist movement; Dr. Weizmann gave it practical direction."
Estimated Value $700 - 900.
