Herzl, Theodor (1860-1904) Founder of modern, political Zionism; writer and editor; he became a Zionist after reporting on the Dreyfus trial.
Typed letter signed ("Hertzl") on "Eretz Israel / Bureau des Zionisten-Congresses" letterhead, 1p, in German, 11 x 8", Vienna, Dec. 7, 1901. Written to the rabbis of Vienna requesting their support for the Zionist movement to establish a Jewish homeland. In part: "…I know that this group of Jewish theologians are good friends and sincere representatives. The conception, which you so often demonstrated in the communities which you were called to manage, not only to defend the religious interest of Judaism but also to contribute with all of our strength to its spiritual and physical regeneration, will replace our painful experience in this period with a better one. You are called to complete the service of enlightenment which we undertake with your word and your reputation. When you do this, we will not only acknowledge and honor our rabbis as spiritual advisors but also as the leaders of the Jewish people."
Very good; partial split at horizontal fold. Matted with an image of Herzl, a biographical and descriptive plaques, and a plaque with the translation into English. Framed to an overall size of 21¼ x 33" with a few small nicks to frame. A superb piece of Judaica.
