Woodbury, Levi (1789-1851) Associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Senator, Governor of New Hampshire and cabinet member in three administrations.

Partly-printed document signed as Secretary of the Treasury, 1p, with docket on p4, 10 x 7¾" (Washington) 7 Aug. 1840. To New York Commissioners Jesse Hoyt, W.S. Coe & B. F. Butler, approving a claim of $134.05 by Parker Howard & Co., based upon a July 1838 Act of Congress entitled "An act to remit the duties upon certain goods destroyed by fire at the late conflagration in the city of New York." The fire began on 16 Dec. 1835, and burned from Fulton Street, near Manhattan's southern end, to the east shore of the island. Much of Wall Street was destroyed, including the Stock Exchange and much of Manhattan's financial and commercial center. Minor tape repairs on verso and some soiling to integral leaf. Bold signature.
