Lot 861

1851 N-2 R1. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. CAC Approved. Beautiful lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown on the highpoints, about 80% of the original mint color remaining. No spots or stains, but there is a shallow low spot covering the neck and jaw (caused by debris on the die). A similar low spot is often found on this die variety, especially in the late die state. The notable marks are a small scuff on the throat (mostly hidden by the low spot) and a dull rim nick at star 4. LDS, die state b. The die lines at the throat and inner curl are gone and the dies are well worn. Our grade is MS64+, tied for CC#6 in the Grellman census (but most of the better ones in that census have far less original mint red). The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. (PCGS # 406652) .
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex Superior 2/2/1992:1296 (lot ticket included)-Dr. Philip W. Ralls.
