Lot 823

1842 N-3 R3 Large Date. PCGS graded MS-65+ Brown. CAC Approved. Very attractive light greenish olive with subtle overtones of light bluish steel and 10-15% of the mint red remaining on both sides. The surfaces are lustrous and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. The only marks are a puff of slightly darker bluish steel toning around star 13 and a tiny spot of carbon near the dentils under the end of the wreath ribbon. MDS, die state b. The fine die lines at UNI seen in the early state are gone. The PCGS label indicates this piece is the more common N-8 die variety, which is incorrect. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census. The Ralls provenance is shown on the PCGS label. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS. Only 2 examples graded by PCGS for the variety (PCGS # 407634) .
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
