1822 N-1 R3. NGC graded MS-64 Brown. Lustrous greenish olive brown and steel with hints of light bluish steel overtone, a beautiful "Greenie." Peeps of faded mint red can be found in some of the protected areas on the obverse. Great eye appeal, essentially flawless. The best identifying mark is a horizontal nick on star 5, but you will need a glass to see it. Nicely struck E-MDS. The fields are smooth and offer a hint of reflectivity, and there are some fine die polishing lines in the fields on the upper half of the obverse. This beautiful cent was called a "Proof" strike when it was exhibited at the 1914 ANS Exposition in New York (see "The American Numismatic Society Exhibition of United States and Colonial Coins Catalog, January Seventeenth to February Eighteenth 1914," page 59, where listed as "1822 Compact Date Proof"). Called MS63 Choice and Finest Known in the Noyes census, his photo #27599. Our grade is MS62. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. And it comes with a great provenance. Population 2; none finer at NGC.
