Lot 726

1820 N-13 R1 Large Date. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown on the highpoints. The obverse retains at least two-thirds of the original red while the reverse shows 80% of the mint color. A very impressive cent with only a few trivial marks, none distracting at all. A tiny spot of darker toning in the field right of the inner curl and a faint planchet lamination at the dentils right of star 10 (as struck) are the best identifying marks. Nicely struck MDS, the usual Randall Hoard die state. Called MS67 by Del Bland. Noyes says MS65 and tied for CC#1 honors in his condition census, photo #20457. Doug Smith examined this cent and said he had never seen a better example of the variety. And Dr. Ralls called it a "blazing gem." Our grade is MS65. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 4 finer, 1 in 64+, 2 in 65, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 36674) .
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex Willard C. Blaisdell (from his fabulous date set)-R. E. Naftzger, Jr., 1989 EAC sale, 4/1989:240 (lot ticket included)-Dr. Philip W. Ralls.
