Lot 653

1803 S-264 R4+ Large Date with Small Fraction G6. Slightly sharper but the surfaces are covered with very fine roughness. The obverse is also covered with myriad faint scratches hidden in the toning, and there are a few more light scratches inside the wreath. The only other marks are a shallow pit in the field above the hair ribbon and a couple tiny rim nicks off the bust tip. Retoned a rather glossy dark olive brown and steel. In spite of the defects, this piece offers nice eye appeal for the grade. The date is bold and the legends are clear, although the denominator is a bit weak and STA has been obliterated by significant die failure. VLDS, Breen state III late. The die cracks on the upper half of the reverse are strong and the retained cud break at STA is bold. In addition the opposing area at the curls and field under the hair ribbon is clearly bulged. These dies had failed badly. A decent example of this popular "Redbook" variety.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.
From the Jack Hafer collection.
