Lot 591
1799/8 S-188 R4 Overdate 9 over 8 VG10. Sharpness VF20 or slightly better, especially on the obverse, but covered with uniform fine granularity under a slightly glossy reddish steel and chocolate brown patina. No verdigris and only a few trivial marks. The notable ones are a thin horizontal nick in the hair under BE in LIBERTY, a shallow planchet flake under the second S in STATES, and a few tiny rim nicks just left of the fraction. Nicely struck EDS Breen state I. The date is complete and clear, and the overdate feature is obvious. Not perfect but quite acceptable for a tough overdate variety that is difficult to find with a strong date.
