Lot 588

1798 S-187 R1 Style II Hair, Small 8 EF45. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel with frosty luster covering the protected areas on both sides. A couple faint peeps of faded mint color can be found on the reverse. Very close to AU50 but there are a few too many tiny contact marks on the obverse for the higher grade plus a shallow planchet void at the tops of TY (as struck). The notable nicks are a pair of tiny ones over the hair ribbon and one hidden in the hair under the I in LIBERTY. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II, with a fine die crack at CA in AMERICA to just below the second 0 in the denominator. The reverse is rotated 25 degrees CCW. Called EF45 by Del Bland. Comes with a great provenance.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
