Lot 553

1798 S-171 R4 Style II Hair, Small 8 VF35+. Sharpness near EF45 but there are a few light contact marks scattered over the obverse, the only notable one being a dull scrape hidden in the hair below the E in LIBERTY. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown with lighter brown toning in protected areas and small spots of slightly darker olive brown toning sprinkled over the obverse. MDS, Breen state IV. A strong cud break has formed just left of the L in LIBERTY, die clashmarks show on both sides, and the repunching on CA in AMERICA is no longer visible. Called EF45 and CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF45 net VF35 and tied for CC#3, his photo #24041. C. Douglas Smith called this cent "An incredibly beautiful coin." And it comes with a really great provenance.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
