Lot 533

1798 S-164 R4 Style I Hair, Small 8 EF40+. Glossy medium chocolate brown mixed with lighter brown toning in protected areas, especially on the reverse. Mint frost shows in the fields on both sides. The only marks are a couple nicks at AT in STATES. M-LDS, Breen state VI. Extensive die erosion and clashmarks cover most of the right side of the obverse down to the date with obvious swelling at the date into the field behind the curls. A fine radial die crack extends from the dentils behind the head into the field above the ribbon where it fades out. This is a great example of a really neat die state. Called EF45 and tied for CC#4 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 net VF30 (reason for deduction unknown) and tied for CC#9, his photo #23999.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
Ex Robert S. Carter, Jr. 3/19/1970-Del Bland-Dr. Dane B. Nielsen 3/1979-Del Bland-Dr. Philip W. Ralls.
