Lot 521

1798 S-161 R2 Style I Hair, Small 8. PCGS graded MS-62+ Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous steel brown with frosty faded mint red showing in protected areas on both sides and darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. This is a beautiful cent, but it is not perfect. There are a few small contact marks scattered over both sides including a thin vertical nick in the center of the neck. In addition there are very shallow low spots on the shoulder, bust, along the profile of the face, and around the leaves on the lower half of the wreath. These were caused by debris (most likely lubricating grease) on the die. E-MDS, Breen state II late, with a light die crack connecting the tops of ATE in STATES. Called net AU50 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, photo #24358. Bland says net EF45 and tied for CC#8. Our grade is MS60 net AU50. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 36047) .
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.
