Lot 519

1798 S-160 R3 Style I Hair with Small 8 VF35. Sharper by at least 10 points but the obverse is covered with tiny nicks that are mixed in with tiny planchet chips on the portrait, and there are microscopic hairlines in the fields around the portrait. The reverse also shows a few planchet chips, mostly inside the wreath, but a larger chip shows on the leaf under the M in AMERICA. The only contact marks on the reverse are a single pinprick at the E in STATES and a few more at the O in OF. Frosty light chocolate brown and steel with luster showing in protected areas and hints of light bluish steel overtone on both sides. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a die chip connecting two dentils at K-8 on the obverse. An imperfect but important example of a variety that is surprisingly difficult to find in high grade. Called AU50 net EF40 and CC#4 by Bland. C. Douglas Smith graded it net EF40 as well. Noyes says EF45 net VF25 and tied for CC#7, his photo #24325.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex Bowers & Ruddy 6/5/1978:26 (lot ticket included)-Dr. Philip W. Ralls.
