Lot 502

1798 S-154 R4+ Style I Hair, Large 8 EF40. Slightly sharper but there is a thin diagonal nick on the cheek and a pair of fine parallel scratches or pre-striking planchet fissures at the top of the wreath. Otherwise this cent is gorgeous, essentially flawless. LDS, Breen state III, with a radial die crack from the dentils to the upper edge of the bust and obvious swelling on the reverse. Struck slightly off center to K-10.5. Called EF40 and CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF45 net EF40 and CC#2, his photo #24193. Either way this is a great cent that offers exceptional eye appeal. And it comes with a good provenance.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.
Ex John Work Garrett, Johns Hopkins University-Garrett Sale, Bowers & Ruddy 11/1979:88-Dr. Thomas S. Chalkley, Superior 1/28/1990:344 (lot ticket included)-Dr. Philip W. Ralls.
