Lot 498

1798/7 S-151 R3 Overdate 8 over 7. PCGS graded Fine-12. The "Close Overdate." Double Struck. The planchet is smooth (which is quite unusual for this variety) and it is toned a slightly glossy steel brown and light chocolate. The only marks are numerous nicks confined to the edge of the planchet (not visible from either side). MDS, perhaps Breen state VI, but that determination is difficult due to the effects of the bold double strike. The first strike was centered on the planchet but the coin failed to eject and was struck a second time about 10% off center to K-12 and rotated 10 degrees CCW. Strong evidence of the first impression is visible on both sides. (Be sure to look for Miss Liberty's lips in the field under her chin.) A great mint error. Our grade is VG10. The attribution, double-struck mint error, and Ralls provenance are noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 35996) .
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex John Hipps Rare Coins-Dr. Philip W. Ralls.
