Lot 487

1798 S-148 R2 Style I Hair, Large 8 EF40. The "Horned 9" variety. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and light olive with hints of reddish chocolate toning on the reverse and traces of frosty luster on both sides. The only marks are a trio of tiny nicks in the field close under the lowest curl and some very shallow planchet depressions caused by debris on the dies. These depressions are located in the field before the neck, across the bottom of the neck, in the field under the end of the hair ribbon, and inside the wreath (all as struck). E-MDS, Breen state II, with very fine die cracks through the bottom of the date and from the lowest curl into the field to the left. The spike ("Horn") on the back of the 9 is sharp. Called EF40 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 Average Plus and CC#5, his photo #24042. Doug Smith called this "a truly lovely cent," and we certainly agree.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
Ex George H. Clapp-Carnegie Institute-unknown-Ray Byrne-Jerry Cohen/Abner Kreisberg 5/9/1974-C. Douglas Smith-Dr. Philip W. Ralls.
