Lot 471

1797 S-142 R5+ VG10. Slightly glossy light olive and chocolate brown. No corrosion or verdigris, only light contact marks. There is a trace of crud nestled into the best-protected places on the obverse and a very light rim bruise is located under the lowest curl. EDS, Breen state I, before the obverse die rusted. Softly struck at OF and ENT in CENT but everything else is strong. Graded VG8 by Del Bland. Noyes says F12 net VG10 and tied for CC#5, his photo #24150. The finest known example of this variety grades only F15 or VF20 depending on the census you prefer, so finding a high grade piece will be a frustrating quest.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex James E. Long 3/1990-Dr. Philip W. Ralls.

Realized $1,880
