1797 S-124 R5+. PCGS graded VF-25. Attractive glossy light chocolate and steel brown with lighter brown toning in protected areas. No roughness or verdigris, only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. The best identifying mark is a shallow planchet flake on the right top of the N in CENT. M-LDS, Breen state VI early. There is obvious swelling at OF and at the top of the second S in STATES in addition to the clear die clashmarks on the obverse. Called F15 Choice and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21327. Del Bland says F15 but tied for CC#2 in his census behind a sharper but porous example. Our grade is F15+, close to VF20. This is the Noyes plate coin for the variety in his book on the early date cents. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. A very important cent and it comes with an impressive provenance. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 35912) .
