Lot 430

1797 S-120a R3 Reverse of 1796, Plain Edge. NGC graded AU-55 Brown. Glossy light greenish olive and chocolate brown with overtones of sea-green covering both sides. Smooth and attractive. The only marks are a tiny nick on the lower lip and a couple small planchet flakes at NE in ONE (as struck). MDS, Breen state III, with minor crumbling on the profile and a fine die crack through the top of LI in LIBERTY. The top of the I in LIBERTY remains uncrumbled. Called AU50 Choice and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20947. Bland says AU50 and CC#3. This is the plate coin for the variety in the Breen encyclopedia and the obverse is plated in Sheldon's Early American Cents. An important example of the Reverse of 1796 type. Our grade is EF45. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. NGC population 1; none finer at NGC, and the second finest graded is only VF.
Estimated Value $7,500-UP.
