Lot 368

1794 S-56 R3 VF20. The "Office Boy Reverse." Ten points sharper where properly impressed, but the strike is uneven, as usual. Breen states in his large cent encyclopedia this variety is "usually unevenly struck, especially on the lower left reverse." The strike is weak on the upper left part of the obverse as well, but not quite as weak as on the bottom of the reverse. The surfaces are smooth except for minor roughness in the field before the portrait. A small dig between the bottoms of the B & E in LIBERTY is the only notable contact mark. MDS, Breen state II. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CW. This variety is called the "Office Boy Reverse" because the layout of the legends on that side is amateurish with cocked letters and uneven spacing. A decent example of this popular variety.
Estimated Value $750-UP.
