Israel, 2009 Dan Shomron, Chief of Staff of Israel Defense Forces, Rare Gold Medal. This gem proof medal contains 17 gm, of 14kt gold. It is extremely rare, with mintage of just 60 pieces. In 1974 Dan Shomron was appointed of the Infantry Division and Paratroopers. In this capacity he led the July 1976 hostage rescue mission to the Entebbe Airport which became known as "Operation Jonathan" in memory of Yonatan Netanyahu, an elite forces soldier who was killed during the operation. In 1987 he was appointed the 13th Chief of Staff of the IDF. His service as head of the IDF was marked by two major events: the outbreak of the first "Intifada" in 1987 and the first Gulf War in 1991. The IDF under his command was charged with fighting terror activities while maintaining the high operational and ethical standards for which it was known.
