Lot 1659

1849-O. NGC graded MS-64. CAC Approved. Well struck and untoned, with vibrant frosty luster throughout. Exceptional choice surfaces. The stars on the Type 1 Gold Dollar comprise a single uninterrupted circle around the coronet-crested head of Liberty. Contrary to the fashion of the period, where the date was invariably fixed below the head, on this denomination the designer, James Longacre, moved it to the reverse, inside the wreath. 1849 dates, and only those of 1849, are found having either a wreath whose ends are nearly in contact at the top or one that is much wider apart, hence the terms "Closed Wreath" or "Open Wreath."

Mint State examples of the 1849-O gold dollar that are on the cusp of Gem quality are very scarce, with Gem pieces rare. Vibrant gold patina is imbued with all the warm golden luster that usually exudes from both sides of these generally well made O-mint coins. The design elements are sharply struck throughout with no marks of concern noted on either side. The eye appeal extends beyond the designated grade. Pop 23; 9 finer, 5 in 65, 3 in 66, 1 in 66+. (PCGS # 7508) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.
