1884-CC. GSA Hoard. NGC graded MS-67. Frosty white coin. The finest we have seen in a GSA holder. Of the various date Carson City Morgan dollars that were warehoused for close to a century between the Nevada Mint and the Treasury, the 1883-CC and 1884-CC issues were by far the most common and remain so today in grades up to MS65. Anything finer than this is elusive. The present piece, for example, in the superb MS67 grade, is one of just 25 that NGC has certified, with none finer.
Prior to the 1930s, this date was a prime rarity, since knowledge of the Treasury hoard was unknown to most collectors. The low mintage of slightly more than 1 million coins tended to confirm this rarity. Yet 962,638 pieces, or 84.7% of the original mintage, were still in the hands of the Treasury Department after March 1964, when a halt was called to the great Treasury release that began in October 1962.
A scintillating brilliant piece, the frosty and beaming white surfaces have luster of inestimable perfect quality. The few light contacts on either side are almost entirely within the devices, and require a magnifier to see. Pop 25; 3 finer, 2 in 67 Star, 1 in 67+ Star.
