Lot 1054

1820. NGC graded MS-67. Famous "Office Boy" Reverse variety. Nice even toning on both sides. Housed in an Old Style Holder.

While this is a scarce variety, it is extremely popular among early dime collectors due to the spectacularly amateurish recuttings on the reverse die, commonly called the "Office Boy" reverse. Among other blunders, it shows the remains of an earlier punch between D and S in UNITED STATES; recutting on the third T, which is too high; recutting on the bottoms of S O in STATES OF; clear reworking on the M in AMERICA; and joining of the ME nearby. It is little wonder that--even in a Mint that was not overly concerned about blundered dies--this reverse is unique to this die marriage.

A stunningly beautiful example with superb sharp design features and full frosty luster. Attractive lightly toned surfaces with traces of pinkish magenta and light silvery iridescent blue toning. This is almost certainly among the finest examples of this die marriage known, and ranks among the top examples for the year 1820. A popular die variety due to the dramatic blunders on the reverse. Much of the legend is recut, including a nearly complete D between D and S, and sharp doubling on several other letters. Pop 2; 1 finer in 67 Star.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.
JR-2, Rarity-3.
