Lot 231

[Two Jewish Sopranos] Grete Forst and Rose Pauly. Grete Forst (1878-1942) One of Gustave Mahler's roster of great singers at the Vienna Opera. She converted to Catholicism in 1940 but was arrested in 1942 and sent to a concentration camp, where she died. Puccini much admired her Madame Butterfly. Attractive gilt-edged cabinet photo signed and inscribed, "As a friendly souvenir of Grete Forst / Vienna June 1906." Rose Pauly (1894-1975) Richard Strauss' favorite Elektra, a role she sang in many opera houses, including San Francisco and the Met. Nazi persecution ended her career in Europe. She emigrated to Palestine in 1946 and taught singing until her death. Two autograph notes signed on picture postcards, both addressed to actress Katherine Cornell, one from Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary), July 4, 1938, and the other Aug. 26, 1941, "from this wonderful country Mexico, where I am singing….I am in N.Y. beginning of Sept…." Estimated Value $200 - 400
