Enesco, Georges (1881-1955) Romanian composer, violinist, pianist, conductor and teacher. Three autograph letters signed, one to French-Jewish composer Fernand Halphen, and two to his widow, all in French. The first, datelined 16, Rue de Bruxells, May 8, 1904, praises Halphen (1872-1917) for his opera Le Cor Fleuri. "…Permit me to tell you…how much I find your work charming, well-balanced, sincere. It is a pleasure to hear the sound of an orchestra that never covers the voice." The opera premiered at the Opéra Comique in 1904. Halphen died in action in World War I. A Mar. 27, 1920 letter to his widow thanks her for her donation for war orphans and adds, "On April Lazare Levy and I will perform your dear departed husband's Sonata in a concert which I am giving as a benefit for Jewish families in distress in Russia and Poland -- in other words for the VICTIMS OF THE POGROMS…." An undated letter tells Mme. Halphen that he "will be in rehearsals at the time of the religious holidays. In my thoughts I will be present with all the fervor I have for everything relating to the memory of the dear departed one…". Estimated Value $450 - 650
