1873. Open 3. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. Mostly red. A popular date. Prior to 1861, the U.S. had a bimetallic system where both gold and silver were money. In 1873, Congress decided to demonetize silver, and from the time that hard money was resumed (1879) to 1933, America was on the gold standard.
