Poland. Bracteate, ND. "Aaron-type" Leszek the White (1202-1227), Prince of Sandomierz and High Duke of Poland. Bracteate. Ref. HP-3. Kopicki -,Czapski -,Karolkiewicz -. Robed half-figure right, in a pose of authority, brandishing a large lily-tipped scepter, annulet above. Reverse: The same incuse. The figure depicted here is clearly not the High-Duke Leszek. He has neither crown, cross, nor sword. His robes appear priestly, and he appears to be using his scepter with a purpose. Portrayed thus, it is possible that this is the work of a Jewish mint master depicting the High Priest Aaron. The "Mountain of Strength," Aaron was the son of Amram and Jochebed, of the Tribe of Levi, older brother of Moses and Miriam. Aaron accompanied Moses to the court of the Pharaoh. There Moses commanded Aaron to bring down the Divine wreath through Aaron’s staff. Stretching out his staff, Aaron brought on the first three plagues. When the tribe of Levi was set apart to perform priestly functions, Aaron was arrayed in the robes of office, anointed and consecrated High Priest. He is thus founder of the Israelite priesthood. His depiction is that of prototype and model of the Jewish High Priest. As such a powerful symbol of pride and identity for a Jewish engraver to use. Strong mint luster Rare. NGC graded AU-55. Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000
