Lot 2470

Islands off Caria, Karpathos. Poseidion(?). Silver 1/3 Stater (4.92g), ca. 500-480 BC. Two dolphins leaping right, within linear square border. Reverse Incuse square punch. Cf. SNG von Aulock 2744, otherwise unpublished. Apparently unique. Choice Very Fine.
With the exception of the von Aulock stater, all known coins of Poseidion(?) - and as Cahn pointedly made clear in his 1957 article in NC, even the mint identification is uncertain - have a more ornate border and the dolphins leaping in opposite directions on the obverse, and a double rectangular punch on the reverse. Therefore, this coin represents a new type for the mint. Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000

Ex Roma IV, lot 384.

Realized $4,025
